Now, the owner claims that there's an Alembic PUP in the thing but no preamp. Doesn't that pretty much defeat the purpose of getting the PUP in the first place?

I saw that bass too - it looked interesting at first, but becomes more and more of a nightmare the more you look at it - especially the saddles made from a single piece of wood!
