I found this clip on you tube with Larry Graham. He's using some kind of overdrive on his bass but that isn't what interested me.
It's that he has a microphone built into his bass via some kind of swan necked holder. Both the bass and the mic are wireless too.
I've never seen that before

Larry is a bad bad man.
He owns the captain's hat look as well. Not many people can pull that one off and still look like a total bad ass.
Cool! I've seen him use a bass that had the gooseneck mic mounted on the face of the instrument, with a big bend to bring it up to his mouth. Looked awkward as heck to me. I would guess this one is a later refinement of that.. Great video!

I've seen this before but it's been a while, very cool. Thanks JV.
I also noticed the link to the video of Flea on this page. While I'm not a HUGE fan of Flea's the solo was cool to watch. His right hand is pretty stinkin quick. Had a good sound too.

The Jam is the baddest bass anthem
olie. If you get the chance, check out Stanley's 'Night school' DVD. Flea acquits himself pretty well in the company of mostly jazz giants.

Very Cool, Flea & Stanley. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rJczx7AMRg) Thanks for the heads up Graeme.

Cool video indeed, Olie!
I'm having a senior's moment, but I have a vague recollection of seeing a similar rig, but mounted on a guitar - maybe a Gibson (?) in my travels. Seemed like an idea whose time hadn't quite come, or maybe had passed already. Anyway, I don't think Larry's bass is the only example. Anyone else have any similar recollection?
I am not crazy after all. Here it is:
