Hi Everybody,
I'm looking into getting a bass to use in my studio. Does anyone have any experience playing a Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass? I'm looking at a 5 string version here:

I'm basically looking for a classic rock sound. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Those MM5ers are respectable. My advice is if you like it buy it.

Sadowsky based p/ups & pre amps, played one in a music shop..sounded excellent..just wish I played like Marcus to do it justice!!!!
Mind you for a rock sound would it be better to head towards Precision or Ricky for that classical rock thump??
The MM jazz is a very funky sounding bass for funk and jazz, you may find it has a lot of middle to top end.
I tried the 4 string many times and I absolutely love it. No better bang for the buck - in fact it plays and sounds better than many Basses costing several times it's price.
I think the 5 string is overpriced - great Bass though.
The 5 string posted at $1350 is a great deal considering a new one lists for around $2500.
Buy it!!!
Lots of choices for Fender(-ish) five strings . . . if I HAD to buy Fender, I'm not much for the Marcus axes. I really liked the recently discontinued Roscoe Beck Five (nitwits!). RB held their feet to the fire to get it right, he really wanted a five-string equivalent to his four-string Jazzes. Passive, they have custom Bill Lawrence five string pickups, assymetric ('airplane wing') neck profile, just a well thought-out axe. I recently tried the Vic Bailey Five and really liked the look of it, all the honey-colored Koa and Mahogany. I REALLY like mahogany based instruments.

I don't see the the diffrence a marcus miller aint nothing but a stock jazz with a Bart Pre-amp with a Badass on the back!.....other than that nothin else makes it special!

Is it Bart or Sadow's preamps in the commercial version..I cannot remember, after looking at the website it looks like an awful lot of thought has gone into building that bass.
I heard that Marcus doesn't hit it off with Alembics, maybe he doesn't like the low pass filters and prefers the cut/boost tone controls..who knows??
He should try an Excel - it's got serious cut/boost without a filter.
