Awww ... thanks cats.  Soooo long ago.  My favorite parts are the clothes that Lee bought the band on Melrose Ave (!!), the terribly out of sync video (oh well), and my reluctance to come downstage when he beckons.  HA!  Always great to see and hear Carlos though, we really miss that guy.

Love that song and Jimmy's playing, I often reference that song when people say Alembics sound too sterile or hi-fi.  Love that tone- crisp, articulate, but funky and gutsy at the same time! unfortunately, that version cut off Phil Perry singing Rock Steady.  He kills it!!!

Yes Graeme, that bass is an '82 which began life with frets on a graphite neck.  It also appears in Holdsworth's Tokyo Dream video from the same era.  I later decided that for me graphite as a neck material worked better in a fretless configuration and I had the fingerboard replaced.  Now it's my backup fretless bass and sadly doesn't see much daylight...
 
You guys all know what I mean when I say that the super-stiff graphite pre-compressed the sound?  I couldn't play that bass very soft or very loud, it always made the same kind of level.  Which is GREAT for a fretless...

I might be wrong, but I think that bass has frets on it at this point? I think :-)
I do love Jimmy's fretless playing though as well!

Sorry I was unclear.  Yes, the bass DOES have frets in the video above and the Holdsworth vid I mentioned.  (I can't play all those notes in tune without them!)  It was probably a couple years later when we swapped out the fingerboard and made it into a lined fretless.
 
Wolf, I don't really know what I'm doing so I sure don't know what to call it.  But I like your description!

Ah you guys are too kind.  My operator's license doesn't legally cover Funk...  I never thought of myself as a funky player.  I have a deep appreciation for the guys who really can go there (you know who you are).  But it's fun to visit that musical neighborhood from time to time and always a treat to play with great players who make YOU sound good.
