Caught Mike right as he was doing work on your bass. Here he's preparing to reattach the fingerboard:

  And the surface being prepared:

  The splice on the back:

He tried to leave as much of the original neck as possible. The alignment is great.  And your first look at your new peghead:

The fingerboard should get attached early this week and the bass back in spray by the end of the week.

This is amazing work!!!  I'm so glad the alignment is going to work.  I didn't realize the fretboard had to come off - interesting how many steps are involved.

Any shots of the new additions to the body?

Looking good!!  Thanks a million!

Hello Mike,

your bass is in spray at the moment, getting the finish on the new peghead. You can barely see the line where the 2 pieces join.

Valentino

That's very cool Valentino, thank you.

If possible, can you show me a photo (or simply tell me) about the positioning of the new master volume pot?

Mille grazie!  Mike

Great to see things looking up for your bass, Mike.  I can't wait to see the new wood fully blended (and fully aligned) with the old under a final finish.  I have to admit, I think the V headstock would have been very distracting to me (risk of damage to the headstock itself, catching on things, putting someone's eye out...).  The cone will look great.

Here's wishing her a speedy recovery and safe home from the Alembic hospital and spa for supermodel wood!!

I'm curious:  What electronics set up does your bass have, that you are adding the master volume?  Anniversary?

Hi Bill -

This is a Spyder bass, so yes it has Anniversary electronics.  The master volume will come in handy.

The whole episode came about because of exactly what you mentioned - damage done to the V headstock (see the My Wife - Whacked! thread).  The V was too much of a target.  While it was in for repair, I asked Mica and the team to make the cone adjustment, add the master volume, and some other cosmetic changes (such as a dummy hum canceller) to make the bass at least appear that much closer to the stage basses Entwistle used.

Can't wait to see/play the end result!  Looks like it's coming soon!

Mike,

It's great to see that work on your Wife is proceeding so well.  I can't wait to see pictures of the bass with the new changes.  You will, once again, have a beautiful bass.  Now you can concentrate on that beautiful girl friend of yours!  Take care.

I never connected with the fact that the Spyder had anniversary electronics.  I always thought they were signature.  The master volume will be nice for you.  That way, every time you tweak one of the pu volumes you don't have to go to your amp (or adjust the other pu vol) to maintain your playing volume.  Keeps the pu volumes just for tone shaping.

Yeah, that's the idea.  I find myself going back and forth to the amp tweaking the master volume there as a gig progresses - would rather have that capability on board the bass.  The new tone shaping capabilities will be cool.  Will let everyone know how it sounds and looks when I get it back.

Cheers, Mike

Mike,
I think your wife will look pretty good soon.
And I must say it would possibly make me jealous...

Oliver (Spyderman)

Now now Oliver, getting jealous over another man's wife.....  wait a minute.....  I think I feel a little twinge of the green monster myself!

Mike,
I'm so happy that you have been able to turn this very upsetting incident into a 'ting of beauty.

I admire your attitude my friend.

ox_junior

Shouldn't that be a ding of beauty, since the whole thing got off the ground from My Wife taking on a little ding?  No jokes about that.  Keep it clean.  Ring a ding ding, as Sinatra would say.

Oliver, they can give you all these same modifications for a surprisingly reasonable price.  Of course the time away from your Spyder sucks and the shipping costs are more for you, but you may feel it's worth it.  I know what YOU want....the same thing I want....I'm just cheating a little.

Of course, if we started getting into the really serious modifications such as the note marker inlays and the totally flat fretboard, then we're talking some serious fromaggio....

Don't be jealous lads!  Just get your own wife...

Impressive work!  I'm glad this is going to work out for the best in spite of the heartache it's taking to get there.

Hello Mike,

the master volume will be installed when we put the electronics back in, so there's nothing to show yet on that front; the body does not need the finish coat, so it's masked, although in this case you can say it's wrapped (except, of course, for the neck and the peghead), therefore there isn't much to see. There will be pictures once it gets out of spray.

Valentino

Thank you as always Val, for this note and the phone call today.

I'll leave you guys alone to do your handiwork!!
