Black cat brown bass?

OK, I'm in trouble - I'm starting to dream of getting a custom! It will be a bass, most likely a fretted 4 or 5 string (strung EADGC), but who knows, maybe fretless or even an 8-string?

What I really want is an inlay of my cat, Sadie. Maybe this picture:

Though now that I look at the picture, it probably wouldn't work. OK, how about this one:

The problem is, where to put it? It can't really fit where the images on Jerry's guitars went - not enough room between tailpiece and the bottom of the body. Dire Wolf is an interesting solution. Or maybe a small inlay on the headstock in place of the Alembic logo, and put the logo down beneath the bridge?

Right now I'm imagining a Brown Bass with black hardware, but that could change. Looks like they don't make a 5-string Brown Bass, huh?

OK, I guess I'll keep dreaming!

There have also been some really nice fretboard inlays showing up lately (Olie's bass being one). They did a big dove on his, a cat certainly seems possible.

I like the idea of the brown bass with the black hardware...Will Gunn had a small standard (buckeye top) that had the black hardware IIRC. It looked SHARP.

Since my cat is black, I'm thinking ebony for her with silver inlays for her whiskers, maybe against a lighter wood background? I'm thinking that since she is black that it wouldn't work as a fingerboard inlay...

I also noticed some nice basses over at Atlanta Bass Gallery - check this one out:

It's got a 5-piece walnut/maple/mahogany neck. I've never noticed one like that before - it looks mellower than the maple neck that mine has. Wonder what it sounds like?

I like this one too:

another brown bass

Especially the back!

The typical neck for a Brown Bass is mahogany, birch and walnut. I would say it is more rounded and/or darker than what you get from the maple and purple heart neck. I like it.

Harry,

I think you should do the inlay as a ebony disc, with an inlaid outline of Sadie in silver.

With maybe some color for the eyes.

Bradley - that is a great idea! That could work for the fingerboard after all!

Keith, I wasn't aware of that aspect of the Brown Bass - not as much info on the site as for some of the other models...

... or even LED eyes, like on Cheshire's mouth (12/06-1/07 COTM).

Harry,

Just for reference, this:

Is sort of what I was thinking.  Black == ebony, and the outline in silver.

You could definitely do it on a fingerboard-- it would look really, really cool.

That's kind of what I had in mind when I posted originally Bradley- I think they might be able to do some cool stuff with some of the shell inlays as well (depending on how expensive/elaborate Harry wants the inlay to be).

That looks awesome! I added whiskers:

Redid it again with less whiskers. Gold inlay for the eye perhaps? My wallet likes Toby's idea for some kind of shell inlay better...

Or how about with a wood background?

Sadie's a cutie. Love the wings, that's a rare mutation.

NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA ... BAT CAT !!

Thanks llobsterbass! I actually have video of her with one of my previous Alembics:

Another idea. If I do this, it will be a Series I. Is it possible to have the filter on the bridge pickup be a high pass instead of low pass?

Bradley Young

Harry,

That's something I've been thinking about for a little bit-- but I want to have low and high pass.

It's kinda tough sometimes to cut bass on a series instrument, so I was thinking that might work.
