I nearly bought an Odyssey bass several years back from The Custom Shop here in Austin.  I can't remember how much it was going for but it had no side dots on the neck!  I can't play without my side dots.  John Files at Bass Emporium has a '77 Series 1 that he has had since new and the side dots have deteriorated on his bass.  I could not get around on that instrument when I played it a few weeks ago.

Wow, Thanks for the information, I have always wondered about this axe.  Have not put it down since I got it used.  
 
Will have to do a little more research now that I know what she is.  
 
And you're right, no dots on the side makes it a little more of a challenge to play
