Yes, I just got this bass and it has an unusual thumb rest mounted on it.  The serial number is 93W8043.  Thank you!

Hello - I am new here, and I am going to do some work on my bass, but another reason I asked about the history of the bass is to see whether Alembic installed the thumb rest on it or not.  Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Richard, welcome to the club.

That's a nice looking Epic you have there, congrats.  Built in 1993, but that's all I can tell you about it.  More on Epics here:

What kind of work are you planning to do on it?

My guess is the thumb rest was NOT done by the factory, unless the instrument was a special order.  And the two additional holes near the current thumb rest may have been a 1st attempt.  I also can't tell how that current piece is held in place but it may be glued...?  If it's in your way it needs to go!

There are some talented guitar repair folks in here as well as Mica who runs Alembic HQ.  So tell us what you're thinking of doing and you will likely get some good advice.

Meanwhile, we hope you are playing and enjoying that bass!

Cheers,
Jimmy J

Thanks for responding!  Yes, it's a nice bass, the bridge hardware is tarnished, and I was thinking about removing it and cleaning it, filling the holes with filler and possibly removing the thumb rest as I assume it's glued somehow. Still, I am afraid to try to chisel it off as I might further damage it.  Overall, it's nice with a few dings and plays well with a nice low action it has about a two-year-old set of Labella deep talkin flats on it, and I will change those with a new set, as I like how it plays and sounds with those strings.  The bass sounds wonderful as well.  Very cool that I finally own an Alembic!  Any further advice would be welcome - thank you!
