The circular spalting on that bass looks familiar but I can't place it or remember where I might have seen it.

It is most unusual. I think the top may be wood from the trunk of a grafted tree.

That wouldn't surprise me. In the California walnut groves the graft the English walnut onto California black walnut root stock. When the groves are replaced the trunks are sold for lumber. When we lived there the left over branches were sold for firewood. We would usually get a cord of walnut which was very inexpensive and mix it with a cord apricot or almond which burned better but cost more.

Such an interesting looking top on this EVH. Definitely looks like wood from the stump of the tree, most likely one that has been grafted, as Keith points out this is a pretty common procedure for Walnut in California. The stumps  of trees can yield some interesting looking wood. Here is a shot ot the stump cut back wood of my Maple Jesselli arch top.
