It's been quite a while since I've recorded anything.  There was a period where other events in life had my attention; and then there was a period of just practicing how to play; and then a period of focus on tone; and then finally turning back to recording.

This is a piece that I've previously shared with you; however, this time it's a bit of a different approach.  It's heavy on effects; and it is a challenge learning how to play in such a way as to not let artifacts of the effects get in the way, on top of the fact that the piece is challenging enough for me to play anyway.

I worked last night and again today on this, and this take is the best one so far; but there is still much work to get this where it should be.  But I wanted to go ahead and share it with you since it's a reasonably decent take.  There is too much low mid in the chords; and there are a number of imprecise fingering sounds.  This is also the first time I've really used volume swells with a pedal; so while it's second nature to many of you, it's a learning experience for me.

This is a private upload for you and a few friends outside of our community.

Dave:

VERY tasty!  I never would have guessed this was done on a bass.   If you're taking requests, how about Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Second Movement - one of my all time favorites.

Very nice! Though I don't think I've ever heard anything you have posted that wasn't "very nice" and tastefully done.

David Houck

Thanks; I'm glad you guys thought it came out okay.

Bill; the 7th symphony is one of my favorites, but I haven't listened to it in quite a while; thanks for reminding me of it.

I get "This track is private", Dave; how do I access the wonderment?

Fascinating... the combination of sound effects evokes the image of an underwater pipe organ. There should be whales and porpoises swimming around in the music video. ;)

Nice job Dave.

I was able to access on my mobile Coz, but not my office confuser. They frown on that stuff down the hall anyway.

Peter; just clicking on the link should work.  I think making it private means that it can't be played by someone who goes to my soundcloud page.  The direct link posted above is required.  If it's not working, try a different browser.

Greg; I think some of that "underwater"-ness is that I have too much low-mid, which I think is partly my chord voicing and partly my tone settings.  Part of the learning process; I'll have to work on that.  Plus some of those mis-fingerings, and still learning to use the volume pedal, are setting off delay artifacts, which I guess adds a sonar element to the underwater impression.

Thanks for the complements everyone.

Hi Dave,   :)

Very nicely executed and creative!  I enjoyed listening and thank you very much for sharing!  :)

Best Regards,

I will join the chorus...very nice Dave!   Did you manipulate the volume manually with a pedal or was it a preset setting?

Rob; it's an expression pedal controlling a volume setting.in the effects.  I programmed it to be a curve rather than linear, which makes it a bit easier to control.  So yes; I'm manipulating a pedal manually.

Loved it, Dave, such inspiring song!
Not just a bass, this is an Alembic!
