Hello Friends ,

I'm trying to set up a list of the 20 most popular rock songs ever...songs that you snap after 2 or 3 chords ...This could be a great set list for cover bands  .  So , as someone needs to start , i go first ( 5 songs per entry )  :

1) smoke on the water   : deep purple
2) you really got me    : the kinks
3) hells bells          : ac/dc
4) crosstown traffic    : jimmy Hendr.
5) jumping jack flash   : rolling stones

So , after 10 entry ( of 5 songs ) , a first point will be made with the songs that have been most voted for !

On your marks , ready : go !

Hi - there used to be a notice threatening a ?5 fine at a music shop by me if you played smoke on the water. You really got me is definately a popular classic,as are numbers 4 and 5.I've never heard of hells bells. What about Hey Joe by Hendrix and Knocking on heavens door aways seems to be popular (The guns and roses version ).

Hi Alain,

Very cool thread idea!  It's hard for me to choose only 5, but here goes:

1)Layla - Derek & the Dominos
2)Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis Group
3)Frankenstein - Edgar Winter Group
4)Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
5)Reelin' in the Years - Steely Dan

I hope the Dan qualifies as 'Rock.'  I was very tempted to put Smoke on the Water on my list too, but it didn't quite make the cut :-).

For popular how about:
1) Whippin Post - Allman Bros. Band
2) Walk This Way - Aerosmith
3) Pump It Up - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4) China Grove - The Doobie Bros.
5) Burning Down the House - Talking Heads

Not so popular:
1)Teaser - Tommy Bolin
2) Hold On - Crack the Sky
3) Spanish Moon - Little Feet
4) Ships in the Night - Bebop Deluxe
5) I'm the Man - Joe Jackson

Special Mention:
1) Road Expense - The Dixie Dregs
2) Breathe/Time - Pink Floyd

There are numerous newer bands I would consider for a cover band but you stated most popular ever which implies a certain amount of aging.

Hello Charles (1 ) , charles ( 2 ) and keith ,

Thank's for your participation . I take note of every suggestion and the final results will be posted the 5 th of july at...my birthday !!!!!!!

Btw , in  most popular ever  , you can also put songs or bands not that old that you find really terrific ( ex: u2, the clash ( a bit old indeed ) , police , nirvana...for example ) .

Thank's friends !

Alain,
I hate to break it to you but your examples are a bit long in the tooth. :-)
When I was thinking of newer rock groups it was  the likes of, Nickel Back, Incubus, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Saliva, etc... All have good songs in my mind but they have'nt met the test of time to see if they hold up.

Keith - if the test is songs frequently played by teenagers in guitar shops, the most recent entrant that I am aware of is Smells Like Teen Spirit.
