Looks like Padduk to me.  Forgive me if I spelled that wrong.  I could be wrong, but I own two basses with that wood. The grain looks very similar.  Usually bubinga is one of the woods you think of that they use on the back of a warwick necks long with wenge.  I'm sure you'll find out soon enough if you ask about the serial number.  Good luck!  I'm very curious.

Yea thanks, I looked up Padauk and it is also known as Vermillion, imagen that.  I think you are right.  I did the serial number request some time ago and am still waiting.  Whatever it is I like it!  Very thick grain, very hard.

Brian,
As far as I can tell from the picture, it doesn't look like the bubinga I have seen.  Here is a pretty representative pic of my bubinga Epic.  Welcome to the board.

very nice, both.  I have looked at alot of pictures and have noticed that on many of the Epics; different types of wood look red, stained I assume?  I guess I will just have to wait a few months to find out what the record is.

i think i read a ftc here that included wood staining.

FWIW, I had a warwick bass made of bubing that looked like that.

Here's the bubinga back of my Stanley Clarke Standard:

Hope it helps! (I'm happy to show off my basses anytime!)

Here is a link to Terryc's Mark King 93.  Wow, is that a beautiful top or what.  Congrats, Terry.

I would have thought that Epic could be walnut and the red tinge is coming from it being surrounded by a maroon case interior.

hieronymous - your laminate is much darker than mine but you can still see the flame.
I guess no two same woods are the exactly alike.
