I just checked out one of their video's on you tube and noticed a very different version of a Series bass that he was using on the sun goes down video. If you check at time 2:13

It's got a sharp pointy headstock and also a non standard alembic bridge. looks kind of fender style.
i wonder if that was one of the alembics he bought second hand before he got the basses that alembic made for him. The pickups also look very large.

Jazzy, that is not an Alembic. It's an Ashley Pangborn. MK used it for a short time in the Hey Days.
Design clearly borrowed from Alembic.
Here is another one on Basschat:

In this live video there's one of the rare appearance of that bass.

Same bass, different top

jazzyvee

yeah I can see from your links, it looks more like a merger between an alembic and Jaydee styling but none of the sound.

He still looks pretty happy about it in that picture!

This is awesome news.  Hope they come to Philly. On a side note, seeing the Sun Goes Down clip makes me think Mark King must have been an influence on Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords.

As a L42 fan, Mark used Jaydee along with the Ashley Pangborn which are very Alembic influenced, the Ashley also makes an appearance in the video for 'Lessons in Love'
Mark began using Alembics when they were supporting Steve Winwood in San Franscisco and a rep for Alembic came up to him and asked if they could build him a bass..this was in 1987.
He moved on from them after L42 disbanded in 1994 using a variety of basses including Fender J basses and finally going back to Status which he uses now.
He still has the Alembics..on a histroical note, his basses were the first to have the hyperbright LED's installed.
The two SII's he has are coco bolo and a really nice quilted maple along with some medium scale SI's

Having trouble finding the clip I'm thinking of, but squint your ears a bit when you listen to this one.

Terry, thanks for the historical notes and whereabouts of Mark's basses.  Cool!

phobucket

He's playing one of his Alembics in this clip.  What a fantastic sound!

Considering Mark is known for having a very bright sound, that Pangborn sounds remarkably dull in tone
