I saw a jazz bassist playing a bass whose body seemed to be made of either aluminium or steel tubing with a tube handle running parallel to the neck.
 
It definitely was not a Kramer or Travis Bean.  There was no wood on the bass.
 
Any idea what it was?

Gittler? The basses are rare.
