I am the proud purchaser of that bass. It will be number 2. I had 2 Essence 5's, sold 1, kept 1. Regretted it deeply. I'm hooked. I wanted a 4,and saw this one, it looked very good. I can't wait to get my hands on it. Willride3

Congrats Willride, you got a great bass there. I have a lefty Orion and I think you will really like the tone of the set neck model.  That vermillion top is beautiful.
Post an update for us after you get to play it for awhile.

Hello, everyone. It has arrived, and been used out a few times already. I love it, the electronics are very nice, a bit different from my Essence, even better I would say. The neck is great, I lowered the action quite a bit. Here is the only weird thing.....it seems a bit more of a reach for my shorter arms to reach the lowest notes of the neck. I can get them, it's just a bit different from the Essence. There is also a heel at the low end of the neck that my Essence doesn't have. Comparing the two side by side, I see a little difference in the length of the upper horn. That is likely the reason.  The electronics of the Epic in a Essence 4 would be great,  would I really be wanting a lefty Orion?

Hi Thomas,
The heel just below the headstock is called a volute and is a common feature of set-neck Alembics. Essence basses typically don't have a Q switch (although it can be added), without it you always have the frequency boost at the filter rolloff point.
I haven't played an Orion, I have two Epics with the same bass and treble controls as the Orion.

Willride3, Maybe your Essence is a 32 scale (medium) and your Epic is probably a 34 scale (long).  meausure the distance from the nut to the 12th fret, then double it, that will give the scale.  Let us know.

Hello, Southpaw, I just measured the Epic against the Essence, they are both 32 medium. I changed the strap a bit, and it is a lot better. I spent a couple of hours today in practice, I am a happy guy right now ( actually every day ), but having two great Alembics to play is a real blessing. The tones are the best. I have LED's on my Essence, and sure would have liked them on the Epic. I have heard of Fret fx, but I'm not sure about that whole deal, who knows, maybe I will try it someday.  About the Mark King bass on ebay, you know your stuff, because that is exactly the deal. It wasn't a good fit for me. It sure is a great looker, and sounds great. Heavy though. Thanks    willride3

willride,
I've got Fretfx on two of my Alembics, red on an Epic and blue on my Distillate. No worries, no problems. The red set I put on my Epic over three years ago.
YMMV

I love medium scale! You have two great basses both mediums, perfect. Congrats.

Hello dadabass ,I'm going to give it a try, Fret Fx that is. and southpaw, I agree about the medium scale length. For me it is a perfect fit.I played the Epic again last night, The music team director saw it for the first time, and was very pleased. The leader last night was grinning all night. It is just a Great Bass. I've got a show coming up in June, and look forward to sharing them with all who come. I an really satisfied right now.  willride3
