The seller says the only issue with this bass is a missing dot marker.  Look at the neck/headstock joint.  I have never seen one like this.  I am thinking headstock repair by someone not very good at such things.  Anyone know this bass?  $4K seems a lot to pay for such a sloppy neck job/repair.  Oh, silly me, it is only $3,999.00, my bad!

Have you posted the correct link Thomas? I can't see any evidence of a repair at the headstock joint.

It's the right link, Graeme - note the mention of the missing dot marker, and the missing 5th fret oval in the full frontal shot; but I likewise see no sign of damage, just a little finish wear.  Could you be more specific as to what you're looking at, Thomas?

  Have you ever seen a 'round' neck joint?  I am thinking it looks like someone put their own lams on - Not maple and walnut as the factory does.  And they look sloppily done, compared to the 'perfect' contours these joint usually have.  Wrong shape, wrong wood (No maple), and .  I consider this a major issue with the bass, especially for the price asked.

That part of the neck is subject to a lot of variations in wood lams and shapes.  Here's one from '83:

Yes, FC, good point - that is very true.  Important part is to bring it up so someone can make a better decision if they are thinking of buying this bass.  I would not like to see someone spend their hard-earned money and be disappointed in the end.  eBay has enough of that already.

I'm wondering about the vertical line and what looks like a plug near the top.  Almost as if the head cracked vertically and  was repaired using the plug on top to hold it together.  Or maybe I'm just tripping.

Plug?  You mean that orange thing?  Looks like a price/inventory sticker to me.  But I do see the possibility of a crack in that dark streak, NTYMI.

After looking at the pictures on another auction at eBay posted for a 1980 Series II bass (http://s234.photobucket.com/albums/ee115/cwh1/May%2026/?action=view¤t=332.jpg), I can see that I am mistaken and it is just an odd (For the norms, I suppose) wood combination, and a short run on the headstock's back lams.  Ah, the importance of posting large, clear pictures of your item being auctioned.  Still, it is always best to question when one has one.  No harm, no foul.
