Am I missing something here or was there a special run of S1 basses in 1978 with funny knobs, big brass neck plates and extra holes in the body?

Hmm, firstly, it?s a series 2. Also, the pickups can not be from that era. truss rod cover may be original though...

Is the 'sense spectrum analysis' some sort of reference system I've not heard of?
 ....Do I need one ? ... or many ??

That bass is a Series II.  It was mine for a while.  I got it from the original owner here in New Orleans.  
 
The LED's in the fingerboard went out, so I sent it back to Alembic.  It had some neck issues so they fingerboard had to be replaced anyway.  When that was done they fitted a board without LED's.  While the bass was there I had them remove the master volume because it was in a very strange spot to me.  I kept hitting my hand on it.  They replaced the master volume with an inlay.
 
I ended up parting with this one because the neck was too wide for me.  It's a medium scale so maybe that is why the knob placement was off for the master volume.  I just was not used to it in that spot.
 
If I remember correctly, I ended up trading it locally for another medium scale Alembic Series I with a quilted maple top.

                  How was the balance on this bass with the small standard body and the medium scale neck ?

   It was neck heavy for sure.  That never bothered me though.  I have 2 medium scale small bodied basses now and I don't have a problem with it.  It's all in the way I anchor my right arm on the body holding it in place.  To each his own I guess.
 
But I remember why I sent it back to Alembic way back when.  When I bought the bass the previous owner overtightened one of the two truss rods.  This made the truss rod poke through the back of the neck near the headstock veneers.  Alembic gave it their blessing stating it was structurally sound.  
 
I remember the neck being wide at the nut.  There was not much taper.  It was just about as wide at the nut as it was up the neck at the 12th fret.

               Thanks for your recollections. I like medium scale as well. When I first saw this Bass on ebay I thought that the neck looked a bit longer then most other small standard body Alembics and in fact it is !
