Looks like this one has been upgraded from Series I to Series II electronics, its in the '89 catalogue as Series I (with what looks like Series II woodwork)

Wonder if those are two different basses?

I'd say same bass. Look at the figuring around and to the right of the master volume (and especially near the Q control to the right of it). Looks too similar to be coincidence.

...maybe we have uncovered a photo finish a'la '90's Japanese Fenders scheme here?    
 
Just noticed this bass is also in the 2000's catalogue:  Link :-) (with Chrome hardware)

Also note it mistakenly says Deluxe body laminates in the '89 catalogue, corrected in the newer catalogue (Deluxe neck lams)
Bass has Series I body (5 piece) and Series II style neck (3 PH and side leds)
