What is a standard wait for a custom series bass? I know the Classico has taken 3 or 4 years but i am 3 years along now and was getting antsy? What is average?
I don't think there is an expected timeline with customs- especially if there are inlays or custom electronics involved.
Have you spoken to your dealer or directly with MIca or Susan?
I am not to worried about it, honestly I am just curious.... calling up a bunch and bugging is not my style. Just would like an idea what everyone's wait time is. Please chime in all you custom owners. Thanks!
Maybe you could get a rough idea by looking at 1st post & finish dates on old FTC threads.

Austin,
I don't think a phone call inquiring about the status after 3 years would be considered 'bugging' by the fine folks at Alembic. Based on the few posts you've made, I'm guessing the phone call would be a friendly inquiry, not an annoyed customer calling.
Best of luck with it and it must be darn spectacular to take 3 years. Please post a few photos on the forum once you get your hands on it!
I've paid for my bass on April 24th 2009 and got it on December 11 2010.
paid april 2010, got june 2011
if I remember correctly the order for my Classico was placed in/around November of 2005. I've been hearing it's getting close now.
edit:Lesh, you're name is Austin too? maybe they have something against us.... hmmmm.....

The wait can be VERY tough. You have to try to remain positive. It will be worth it in the end.
It's more than an instrument, it really is a work of art that can't be rushed.
That's just how it is.

i didn't mean to sound overly negative there. i also didn't mean to put you're instead of your. oh well.
as far as the wait goes, 3 or 4 years ago i was anxious... now, it'll be more like a nice surprise when it's done.
I have talked to Susan a few times over the years and it does have a lot of unique or at least differant items on it so I expected a long wait.
Austin if you can wait 6 years I can wait too. Your classico is one the best instruments I have ever seen!
By the way I paid for my new custom June or July 2008. My 1978 series one is in for a re-finish and new electronics so I miss my Alembic and can't wait for my new custom! I am playing a cheap Ibanez for now and it just is not the same without my old Alembic around.....
6 years!!! Wow! O.K., now that's too long. I have to be honest, that's the single biggest consideration that weighs on me in my decision to make another custom. My others, which took around 2+ years (plus additional years for minor repairs, etc...) left me a basket case. I don't think I can handle that emotional roller-coaster again. I think that a 6+ year stretch would have pushed me over the edge!
Good luck my friend - and stay strong. This one definitely needs to be showcased once it's completed!
All right I heard back from Mica today.... my re-finish is in spray right now and my new bass is in one piece so I assume by Christmas or so!!??
Mine was 3 years. But they had to figure out *how* to do the inlay that I wanted, so that took some extra time.
My first Dragon Wing was paid 9/08 and received 8/09. The second one was authorized by UPS 1/10 and received 9/11. I picked up two other Alembics in the interval to take the edge off.

Good things come to those who wait..and I bet it will be astounding..may end up as a featured custom of the month
But 3 years is a long time....
I've been waiting 3 years as well...
This is an old post but I thought I would revive it.
How long has everyone's custom bass and guitars been taking? I am still waiting for my bass and have been waiting for 13 years as you can see by my old posts from 10 years ago.
Have you made an inquiry with Alembic? My custom Further took almost three years, but a lot of that was due to my wanting some inlay work that Alembic had never done before. It took them a while to figure it out how to get it done. Thirteen years? Did you ask them to grow the tree in-house?
Bill, tgo
Yes I have spoken to Alembic. There is custom electronics and it is going to be awesome when it gets done! I just thought it would be good to re-vive this post and maybe get some respones that might help my cause.
I'll be giving you a call today - I was discussing with mom last night. She's been under the weather and didn't get back to your last message. I have a load of very good news for you!
I never heard of Wal Basses so I looked into them. They're an outfit in England that makes bespoke Basses as well. The average turnaround for their product is 3 years. I can understand a year but three? Do they grow the trees themselves?
I had a custom Signature made in 2012. Nine months is all it took and I was very pleasantly surprised. Now its "custom" features did not include intricate inlays and it wasn't a Series I but this turn-around was much faster than I expected and was shorter than what I've experienced waiting for an electronics upgrade for a Series I shop night special (13-months and counting)
Yes, but in all fairness Brian, when you had the bass dropped off at the end of last year 2019, I warned of a substantial delay in being able to start the upgrade because we were moving. I did underestimate the impact of moving on many delivery dates, but characterizing your current experience as a 13-month wait is accurate, but without explanation, not entirely correct.
