looking for a roundwound that isn't super bright.  I like to slap and play fingerstyle, but I dont love super bright rounds, but I feel like flats arent bright enough, any idea?

I know I'm a broken record about this, but DR Sunbeams. They go on all my basses with rounds.

I'm with Edwin. Sunbeams for me, but I normally throw on a set of chromes every 3rd or 4th string chamge.

I like Alembic strings on my Alembics. You might also want to try a ground round wound string. I played GHS Brite Flats, which are GRW strings, for years on my Jazz Bass (and still do). I also played Dean Marlky's GRW and while I liked the tone the feel wasn't for me.   

DR Sunbeams for fretless are very nice. D'Addario EXL180s on my fretted Alembics are my current go-to strings. Alembic strings are nice too.

Aren't nickel strings going to have less high end than stainless steel? I use nickel rounds on my Stanley Clarke - they might have a bit more tension though too.

I have been using Markley Blue Steel strings for a long time but a few years ago finally tried the Blue Steel Nickle, like them a lot and don't plan to go back to pure steel strings. The nickle strings definitely have a more mellow high end than the steel strings and the windings feel a lot smoother and more comfortable, too. I got a set of DR Hi-Beams for cheap and tried them but they were too bright, may try the Sunbeams at some point. I don't tend to do much experimenting with bass strings due to the cost. I prefer strings with a tight core tension. The TI Jazz Round Wounds sounded great to me and the windings were the most comfortable of any strings I have tried but I could not get used to the low tension.

You might want to give stringjoy a shot.I find them to be not overly bright but a decent reasonably priced string.
