I have a Further with LEDs.  There are 3 control cavities on back.  The first (largest) allows access to all the pots and switches.
 
1. The second (middle size) rear cavity has 4 9V batteries.  What do these control?
 
2.  The smallest cavity fits 1 9V battery.  What does this control?
 
3.  The LED switch on the front is off in the up position.  The fx loop control on the front is also an on/off switch.  I assume that the up position is off as well? When the switch is up the output volume is extremely low and thin sounding.  In the down position the volume is loud and the signal so strong it overdrives whatever it is plugged into?  IS this normal.  I only run my guitar in mono.

I only had 4 9V batteries around and chose to replace the 4 battery LED cavity, thinking that I was replacing the preamp batteries (not believing that there was any way those little lights could use that many batteries).
 
Looks like that most likely explains why the guitar is so quiet.  Will try replacing the last 9V and see......

When you flipped the OBEL (on-board effects loop) control and got little sound, did you have any effects plugged into the OBEL stereo jack at the time?

I'm assuming that up is the off position for that switch.  That being the case, I get only very quiet sounds in the off position, and very loud overdriven sounds in the on position.
 
My guitar is routed from Further Mono Out > pedalboard > amp.

The OBEL switch switches the effects loop in and out of the signal chain.  When the OBEL is switched on, and there is nothing plugged into the OBEL stereo jack, you should get little, if any, signal getting through.  If you're running the guitar out to the effects, then to the amp, you're not using the OBEL.  In this situation, one position of the OBEL switch should give you full signal, the other little or no signal. If you are getting full signal in one of the positions, then your battery has some juice in it.  If the pre-amp battery is dead, you shouldn't get any signal. As for up vs. down, I'm not sure off the top of my head, but if I can get to my instruments later today, I'll check.

The usual way for us to orient switches is down (toward the floor) is on while you are playing the guitar.

Okay, popped a new 9V in and everything sounds great!  
 
The switches are all giving me problems.  I have exercised them all, and not much has resulted.  Most of them have to be switched on, then sort of pushed to one side to get them to work.  Any next steps I should try to get them to work better?

have that switch problem you mention with my black Europa/Elan for the switch that works the LED's.  To get them on I have to push the switch down and push side to side before they stay on. All the other switches are fine.

My Further is back at the Mothership for this same problem with my LED mini toggle.  Mica says they just don't make them like they used to.

Same LED switch issue here, even after a switch change.
 
How about an on/off switch like the midi channel changer on the current COTM?  It would be sleek and out of the way.
