You can tell they're sisters when viewed from behind.

I'm curious - what is the top/back wood on that '72? It looks like quilted maple, but I've never seen it with a pinkish tint..

Rick Turner indicated that he recalls it to be the most dense birdseye he has ever seen... front and back

Sorry... I think that the color looks so different because it has an oil rubbed finish rather than a hard finish.

thanks

Oh, that's very cool Barry. I thought it was either birdseye or quilted.

I've always been a fan of oil finishes vs lacquered. It really allows you to appreciate the textural characteristics of the wood.

(Don't tell the boys in the HAZ-MAT pajamas at Alembic I said that). ;)

The nice aspect of an oil finish is the ease of a minor blemish repair. I love wood and have built a few projects and finished them with an oil finish for specifically that reason;  ease of aesthetic maintenance. But you must be diligent and re-oil as needed. You have to give the  wood LOVE! when it needs it .Some times  it just depends on a players chemistry when it comes to basic wear and tear regarding  such maintenance .

Good thing is thaqt this baby looked as if it was never played when I got it. It was a little dirty lack any shine. These photos were taken pre cleanup. I didn't go at the brass or anything but protected the naturaql patina but using the cleaner and applying a new coat of oil made it shine all the brighter.I prefer the openness of the sound of a guitar with the oil finish as well.

These are the dirty look?

Wow, send us new pics when they're clean! If they are already gorgeous like that, I simply can't imagine how it'll be when lightened by cleaning...
Not just a bass, this is an Alembic!

The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!
