Recently got this 83 Black Spoiler and according to the owner it has spent most of it's life here in the Bay Area, East bay to be exact, wonder if it's Cliff's old bass?

It could be...Does it have a big chip on the side of the headstock? That is one of the distinguishing marks Cliff mentioned in the interview where he said it was stolen. I haven't found any pics that show this chip, though. There are a few more pics of Cliff w/ Spoiler in the artists and their Alembics thread...Mica has said she believed the bass was Zebrawood. Can you post pics of the bass?

All I got for now is this crappy pic taken on my cellphone from my laundry room.

No chip on the side of the headstuck but I see some dull spots on the finish so it could have been touched up at one point...

One thing I noticed about this bass is its wired for 4 positions on the selector switch, the very first position turns off both pickups. Is this how they all are wired?

lembic76450

Yes,  that is part of the Spoiler electronics package. Ironically the off position is actually a standby position.  There is still a battery draw in that position.

I love the four position switch! It lets you set your volume where you want it and then leave it there! Between songs/sets, you can just set the selector switch to off. It's even better in the Anniversary electronics package where you have independent volume controls for both pickups...

Nice bass by the way - ironically, I live in the east bay!

Sorry, the San Francisco Bay Area - in the original post, blackelan says that this bass came from here. I live in Oakland - in fact, I'm typing this in Oakland Chinatown right this instant!

blackelan

I live here on the peninsula in Mountain View. I always find all the deals on music gear in the East Bay for some reason.

blackelan

One more question, what is the deal with the strap buttons, they almost look like Schallers, is this a older version as I would like to utilize them?

alembic83

My black '83 Spoiler has the same strap buttons. I don't think they work with Schaller, but I could be wrong...BTW, my serial number is 2608 so I guess ours are pretty close siblings.  Post better pics when you can... It would be something if it did turn out to be Cliff's!

blackelan

Just got it back from my tech and is setup with a new set of Rotos just like Cliff's cant wait to find out its history, it had a chip that looks like was touched up on the side of the peg head.

I am having trouble linking the pic...

For some reason I am not able to use the IMG code to link to my Photobucket for a larger pic like I was able to earlier in the thread perhaps its a newer version of the forum software.
