maybe its a B instead of an 8

97ow10680 would make sense ... The 10K number puts it in the late 1990s, and OW indicates an Orion bass.
 
The 8 or B at the start doesn't make sense.

Uh - they usually put USA in front of the S/N - or was it MADE IN USA?

USA comes after the serial number (at least on mine)
