The bass player's function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car... everything else is merely colours.

I think that may be Featured Custom "Rhumba Retro"... http://www.alembicguitars.net/info/fc_rhumbaretro.html

One of my all-time favorites from the archives.

*Thought for a minute it might be a different bass, but that's her.

No,
that particular one in the ad has standard oval
inlays.
But what looks strange is the script on the pickups?!?

Look at close-up pictures of the headstock inlay logo, and bookmatched veneer Oliver. Rhumba Retro used to have the owner's name in the fingerboard. I am guessing another caretaker opted for the ovals. Same for the aftermarket knobs.

I was writing with the seller today who is also a great bassist with a very individual playing style.

Check it out:

Very nice guy, said he had the fingerboard changed to a regular Alembic one with the Ovals. This work was done by Alembic when he was in the US and brought the bass along.

Always loved this bass when it was a featured custom.

Oh yes,
understand.
Well I personally wouldn't do any
changes to such an iconic example of an Alembic
out of the customs range.
Well, my personal opinion.
Many thanks for clarifying.

I agree the original inlay and font were very beautiful. The reason for the change was that the inlay was his name. He knew he was going to sell the bass and figured that nobody would buy a bass with someone else's name in the fretboard.

Mica, maybe you can confirm that you guys replaced the fingerboard on this one? Is it a standard procedure? Anything to be concerned of in terms of stability, playability or sound? Thanks.
