It says 38 scale.  Could this be?  The picture in the case doesn't make 38 seem right.

I think 38 is incorrect.

Serial # (as reproted by seller) is 74-67.

Yep....I used to own this bass. I sold it to the ebay seller over a year ago. It is a great bass. A smokin oldie. I used it a lot. It was a little hummie. Could use an upgrade, that's it.

It is a 34 scale.

You know....when you deal with round wound strings, this buzz stuff becomes more acute if you aren't deadly accurate with your finger placement. Your right hand attack and the string tension, due to different gauges and manufacturing tolerences, also have their say in the buzz war. The slightest crimp or twist in the string can screw everything if you consider having very low action. With the wrong tweeking and set up, I can make every string and note buzz if I want to. That being said, I don't recall any buzzing what so ever. This is based on my playing style.  
 
Regarding construction, I got all that stuff confirmed with Mica some years ago. I recall the back being Walnut and core being white oak. The neck has walnut and (I think I remember) maple lams. I forget what the top is. Perhaps a call to Mica or Val would be in order if you have the time and curiosity. Don't hold me to the absolute correctness on this though. It has been a while.
 
It is a great bass in feel and sound. Vibrations felt through the body are even and acoustically pleasent. Upgraded it would be killer. The serial # is correct.

Do you recall if the fingerboard is ebony?  Seems likely.

Fingerboard is rosewood. It went more with the color make up of the instrument and it's pickups.
 
 It has been a while and I have owned many Alembics. I don't remember what the noise was. It may have been HF noise or a combination of both. At this point I feel like I'm guessing. Most of my old ones were this (the same) way.

hf noise requires a 1200$ upgrade and lord knows how long....
all the more reason i bought the 86 persuader

Please to consider: It does have class, historical value and is a great bass! The up grade price and wait time would still work for me for those forementioned reasons alone. I'd buy it back but I have others of the same vintage.
