The only way to overcome temptation is to give in to it. Oscar Wilde

Sam, there's one Wilde quote I picked up years ago, something about a cigarette as the perfect type of a perfect pleasure - but I've since given up tobacco. Meanwhile, my caffeine levels are back to acceptable, thank you.

I love to slap!!!

I have slapped an entire show on more than one occasion. mainly older funk with a solid beat and a few chops thrown in just for grins.

Just build up that knuckle and wail. try to drive the frets through that fret board.

You should find some relief using the Gripmaster, I too have arthritis in my left hand and it does help.

Ajish4, grab some old 'The Archers' albums and hear what slapping can do in a church setting! I have played guitar for 39 years but about 30 years ago I heard a funk band here in Portland at Up the Down Staircase and they had a bass player on a BC Rich Eagle that blew me away. I started also playing bass after seeing him play (I also purchased a 1979 BC Rich Koa Mockingbird new).

Having said that, I really don't like to solo much for the simple reason that I don't think the audience gives a rip (drums stop, very bad! Time for bass solo). Also, I'd rather play a guitar solo, but that's my own thing. Holding down the groove is an art in itself, and took me a number of years to begin to appreciate it. I'll play slap, thumb, normal, pick, fingerpicking style, anything that sounds good to me and not worry about it.

i dotn feel bad anymore.. or inadeqaute
i just cant seem to get the hang of slapping, but i am not keen on it. I've plucked with my fingers for 30ish years,i can also finger pick and just started using a pick for about 9 months now.... so i feel pretty good about my ability to alter my style. i can pick my nose though and i am real good at that! -lol
the only thing i would REALLY like to slap is some of my wiseass customers...

When you've done with your customers you can come across here and slap my managers if you like. They truly deserve it ;-)

Once you start slapping its hard to stop..... BEWARE. The best instruction on slapping I have ever found is a vhs tape called The Slap Bass Program with Alexis Sklaevski. He is one of the best players I have ever seen.

I slap just well enough to embarrass myself.  I can do a passable job on the Warwicks I've played for some reason, but I can reliably do only the very basics on the Series I with the pickup in the way.  Hence, I only do it when I absolutely have to because it's not fun for me (or graceful) at all.  And for some reason I can only pop with my middle finger.

I do enjoy soloing a bit, though it's something relatively new for me and probably makes people wince when I do.

Laying down a groove is where it's at, and I think I'm pretty damn good at that.  I'm primarily a finger player (and I use all 5 of them) who sometimes uses a pick for tunes with static 8ths and/or tunes that need the bass to really cut through.
