I was looking for a decent quality PA for home use and band rehearsals. This will not be for gigging purposes. Any recommendations on a good quality system that won't break the bank?
 
I was told about the Yamaha Stagepas series.

I've been using a first generation BOSE L1 for PA in my studio.  It works very well and has a much smaller footprint than using either floor monitors, or a couple of mains.  These days you should be able to get one for less than a grand.
 
You might also want to check out the Mackie 808s.  A great self-contained 8 channel mixer/stereo power amp.  600 watts per channel and very flexible - you can use one power amp for mains and one for monitors.  Or, you can run the power amps just for the mains in stereo and take a line out to a separate power amp for monitors.  These days you can pick one up on eBay for less than $500.

Don't know how much you want to spend but the Club V series of speakers. Something like the SM12V/CM12V not only works well as a monitor in a larger PA but they also work well as mains for smaller PA needs. I use the CM12V in my PA for vocal monitors and they have held up well. I would combine this with a small powered mixer such as the Mackie. Yamaha also has a selection of small powered mixers. While I have not used them they seem to have reasonable features.

A pair of QSC K-12 powered monitors work well as mains for small / medium spaces. Combine with the mixer of your choice and you're good 2 go.
 
FWIW: I've had good luck using a single K-12 with a Sansamp DI as a portable bass rig and with an LR Baggs Venue DI for an acoustic guitar rig.

I use a cheap Behringer board and powered monitors... sounds fine.
