This will hit close to home for many of the members here. Even if you haven't heard the Grateful Dead songs with John's lyrics, those of us who believe in internet freedom have lost one of the good guys.

Fare thee well now...

How sad!  Barlow always struck me as an exceptionally intelligent committed activist for the cause of personal freedom.  He will be missed.

My 2 nominees for for greatest English-language poet of the second half of the 20th century have always been Townes Van Zandt and Robert Hunter - but if I were make it 3 best, Barlow would have be there.  A devastating loss.

"Is not Hypnocracy no other than the aspiration to discover the meaning of Hypnocracy?  Have you heard the one about the yellow dog yet?"
St. Dilbert

"If I could explain it in prose, I wouldn't have had to write the song."
Robt. Hunter

From my perspective, an integral part of what I think of as the Grateful Dead.
