This Sunday I'm having a recital with my bass students.  8 students doing 5 solos and 7 duets (with me) ranging from major scales and blues patterns for the beginners to jazz standards (all duets), a Bach 2 part invention, and a couple of original compositions.

Wish me luck.

Sounds like fun.  Ever try an all-bass orchestra as long as you have them all there?  You could perform Spinal Tap's Big Bottom.

Good luck with the gig, Michael.  By the way, I love the quote in your profile.  Single malts rule!

Next year I want to try Pachelbel's Canon in D for 4 or 5 basses.  I've already got it mostly written out.

Single malts do rule.  Especially Cask Strength varieties.

And one single malt over heero!
And give those other guys one of the same waiter!

Mmmm Michael ...something tells me we better wish good luck to those poor students.

Or is the master feeling overclassed!
Don't bother ...remind the tale of the Arrow and the Bow of Kahlil Gibran.

Doing Pachelbel's Canon would be fun!

I like the setlist.

Hey, do you guys know Louie, Louie?  (LOL)

(When my kid was in 2nd grade, the music teacher had the whole class play Louie, Louie on their recorders at the annual Wintersing event.  I fell off my seat)

I recently had my second recital on guitar, and that went real well. It was much more fun than the last time (not just because I did not suck like the last time). Instead of having us just playing solo or doing duets with him, the teacher managed to recruit a bass player and drummer for us to play with; we also had a rehearsal the week before with the drummer, bass player and  the teacher on guitar. Everyone piched in about 50$ to compensate the drummer & the bass player, and we all had a much easier time than at the previous recital. If you can arrange something like that next time, I think you & your students would enjoy it.

Val; what kind of bass was the bass player playing ?? !

If I remember correctly, last time you were playing Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.  So what did you play this time?

valvil

Well he was not playing an Alembic but it was a good one...

Yep that was it. Gave me a whole new understanding of why folks are generally afraid to play Mingus.
This time it was Blues In The Closet by Oscar Pettiford, MUCH easier. So, I still picked a song written by a bass player.

What? No Spinal Tap? Big Bottom is a MUST play standard for all bass orchrestras. ;~)

Here's a picture of me & my students.  I had one student who had a conflict and couldn't attend, but we taped his song and played it at the recital.  I had another student who told me that morning that he couldn't get off of work.
