How often are you going to be able to pickup a beauty like this one?  I can't imagine what one would cost to build now and I know what he paid originally.  It is calling your name

dwmark

If I remember prior discussion, you couldn't get it built now because they won't do graphite.  But, when you add the repair costs, and compare other pre-driven pieces, the price is a bit high.

Having said that, if you want it, act fast.  I'm looking at it too.

so, where does one get an 8-string set of flatwounds?

You might be stuck buying singles mixed with a set. Have you looked at the singles at juststrings? You could also call the manufacturers. I've had good reponses from GHS and D'Addario when I've called them. While I'm not famous enough to get custom sets from them they did help establish what single gauges I should order with the standard sets.

I hear Pyramid strings will do special orders

Awesome! - i'm glad someone bought this, now i don't have to hear it calling my name anymore!

some pretty interesting instruments have changed hands on this board lately....

dwmark

Thanks for the wishes and the advice.  I did put out a few feelers the other day and am waiting for a quote from Pyramid (they proposed making some special length guitar strings for the higher octaves, but also wanted to know how many sets I wanted--sounds like it's going to be pricey).

I also checked out some other threads on our site about using rounds on a fretless (I actually have rounds and semi rounds on other fretless basses)and may just go that way.  The board (can't really call it a fretboard, eh?) is in remarkable shape and I can't imagine chewing it up unless I start using this one exclusively and quit my day job.

So, I, like a few others on the site right now, am waiting for the delivery man.  Maybe this week.

On my non-Alembic fretted 8 string I use D'Addario EXL170-8 for years. These are round wound, long scale with .040 .050 .080 and .100 for the low octave and .018 .028 .045 and .065 for the high octave. Only the .018 is a plain string. The rest are all wound strings. This might give you an idea of gauges.

Thanks, Keith.  And I assume that they are not grinding the board.

David,
It's a fretted bass. Just thought the gauges might be helpful as a starting point for you.

Ah, yes.  Eyes aren't what they used to be.

Good thing I've got LEDs on this one.

Thanks.
