Hey Toby,
Here is something similar in concept, if not execution, to what you're wondering about.

Charles,

I did see that one as well and was going to link it in my post up above, but decided that 3 hyperlinks was too much. =)  I know the inlay would be no problem- I'm just wondering if I'm insane for thinking it would look good.

The more I think about the pickguard, the more I like it.  If I could get a flame/tiger stripe maple top (bookmatch to center) with the amber tint to it and an ebony pickguard inlay, I'd probably flip my lid....

That would rock. Talk about understated magnificence! I like the multilaminate bevel idea, too.  They could do it no problem.  With a slightly thicker maple bottom laminate to fit in the recess, then vermillion, maple and ebony lams slightly raised and beveled...mmmmmmmm!

Or how about a quilted cocobolo top laminate for the tortise-shell look?
You've got an extra kidney, right?
:-)

tbrannon

I've got two kidneys- Dialysis is time intensive, but it would give me more uninterrupted practice time.

I was even thinking that a real busy burl amboyna or burl redwood might give that tortise shell look.  If I could get a tobacco burst Elan w/ a tort or black faux pickguard, I'd give both kidneys and a liver!!

EDIT: speaking of tortoise shellish- how's this? I imagine that would give you a killer reddish tort look.

ooooh the options.  amber tinted maple w/ black, tobaccoburst w/ black- tobaccoburst w/ tort.....

I'm right there with you man...I actually looked at that bing piece and some amboyna and redwood burls right before posting.  I think the quilted cocobolo on THIS HEADSTOCK would be the absolute ultimate faux tortise, though.

It's late here on the East coast...
Have a great day!

I do agree that is some SWEET cocobolo- man...my head's swimming with ideas.  Thanks for pushing me over the edge!

A custom Jazz Elan will be coming in July 2008....stay tuned.
