I just put a set of 45-105 Round Core Boomers on my '77 MSB. The tension is just below regular Boomers; they feel like the tension of an old, played in set. The Round Core doesn't seem to buzz easily on the frets like a light gauge can. They have some nice midrange content and grunt right out of the box---maybe a bit more of this than regular Boomers. Maybe the added flexibility is eliciting a different reaction from the pickups; they're pretty ballsy. Overall, a beefy, clear sound with nice sustain. Bottom line...the Round Cores are sort of like regular Boomers, have a meaty tone, and are definitely easier to play and get around on than regular Boomers. I like them a lot.

Keith, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
In my round wound days Boomers were a favorite by far.   Sounds like they made a good thing even better.   8)

Hi Paul. I agree. GHS has come up with a subtle but nice alternative. The standard Boomers are a little stiffer than most rounds in the same gauge. I'm appreciating the small amount of added flexibility the RC's afford.

After reading this, decided to give myself a present of new strings, even though I'm not recording or playing with other people. I use a heavy set - 50-115 - on my bass, and have been using flats and tapewoulds for the last 5 years or so. GHS has round core in heavy, and i'm really digging the clarity and high end and feel. Tension is a lot lower than what I'm used to, it's nice to be able to do jack bruce bends again :) Woot!

I'm with you. I'm really liking the Round Core Boomers at 45-105. So comfortable to play, and the tone is so good.

Upon reading the thread title, I must admit that I envisioned a few overweight guys, born between 1945-1960, huddled together standing on your instrument ... rim shot!

Thanks a lot, I'll never get that image out of my mind---lol

Not just a bass, this is an Alembic!

This is why I like DR Sunbeams so much. Nickel round core round wounds.

Haven't played Boomers in decades, but I bet they are pretty nice.
