I believe Stanley Clarke has his neck pickup so high, it becomes his thumb rest while playing.

It's not working for me. It's something I've been meaning to do. Your thread actually made me think of it again....

I'm guessing this is not that unusual.

i use my pickups as thumb rests no matter what height they're at

I don't use thumb rests . I use the side of my thumb to mute and pluck  with along with three fingers on my right hand. Most of the time very close to the bridge.
