I could have sworn Ross Valery used one of these in White for the Journey Video When you love a Woman.

Hi,

This ALEMBIC JAPAN brochure is mine.
I posted this thread and Mica said about it this thread.
Another body style (maybe prototype) is here

I've been duly chastised about guessing, but I vaguely remember that this was a distributor, and they had some deal to put the Alembic name on the basses.  It was short lived.

They're pretty kooky looking.

Seems to me they would be a collector's item if you could get your hands on one, just because of the novelty.

Danno, the bass you saw Ross playing was most likely a Curbow.  They look very similar, but he has been playing that model for a number of years after he got the thrill of playing Ovation bassed out of his system

For once a legitimate bolt-on Alembic!

I don't know the particular Journey video you cite, but Ross Valory played the Ovation Magnum  bass for a number of years when Journey was gigantic and it too has a similar shape.

An interesting side point - the Magnum bass was the first graphite-reinforced, wood neck in commercial production.  The parent company of Ovation was Kaman Corporation which was a leading fabricator of advanced composite parts (including many helicopter blades) for the military.

Still is. They also own Hamer, LP, Toca, Gibralter, Genz Benz, Takamine, Gretsch, Sabian, Dixon Hardware, Seiko, Lee Oskar Harmonicas, Vic Firth etc.

I found the video. Not the same bass, ol' memory playin' tricks by gum!

Also Randy Jackon in Spandex and Cain with keetar!

BTW danno.  Those links both go to the same video.  Bummer.  I wanted to see Randy in spandex.

The cool thing (and bad thing) about youtube is that it pulls up allsorts of crazy videos that might be associated with the one you are watching.  I just spent a few minutes re-living the eighties.  THe hair.  The colors on the clothing.  The things that the producers though would look great in a video then are just plain silly now.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyWFa7L4s-0&mode=related&search=

Small clarification, Danno - Kaman now owns Gretsch Drums, but Gretsch Guitars is currently a subsidiary of Fender.
